Mercedes to operate 5 battery plants by 2019

Daimler has no intention to become dependent on Asian EV battery suppliers LG Chem, Panasonic or Samsung. Instead, it is building three factories under its subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive’s flag in Germany. The first two are located in Kamenz and will be operational early next year, the third one is to be built near Stuttgart.

But Europe is not the only continent where Mercedes will be manufacturing drive batteries. The company is investing $1billion in a battery plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Finally, the group is erecting a new factory for Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. (BBAC), the German-Chinese joint venture between Daimler and BAIC Motor, to support the locally-built EQ models.
