EU wants stricter WLTP and RDE procedures

The European Commission has organised a public consultation regarding the proposal to limit the tolerance margins allowed by today’s WLTP and RDE procedures. If accepted, the proposal could have the potential to send another shockwave through Europe’s automotive landscape.

The goal of the proposal is to enhance the reliability of the type approval procedures and restore consumer confidence. Concerning WLTP, Europe wants to set stricter conditions for the tests, eliminating the speed tolerance margin, for instance. Moreover, it wants to introduce on-board fuel consumption monitoring to compare laboratory results with real-world CO2 emissions.

Concerning the RDE, the European Commission considers increasing the number of emission checks on vehicles on the road as well as tests carried out by independent and accredited third parties.
