Seattle greens (and shrinks) city fleet

By 2020, Seattle wants to reduce its 4,150-vehicle fleet by 10%. And by 2030, the city on the U.S. West Coast wants to eliminate all fossil-fuel vehicles from its municipal fleet and replace them with electric vehicles (EVs). In order to work towards these targets, the City of Seattle will no longer fund the development of traditional fuelling stations for its fleet, redirecting its investments towards EV infrastructure instead.

Since 2011, the City of Seattle has already installed more than 300 charging stations, in order to support the transition to a more electric fleet. Seattle's municipal fleet currently includes around 200 plug-in electric vehicles, hundreds of hybrids, and the largest government-owned EV charging hub in the U.S. The focus is now expanding from introducing electric sedans to electric SUVs, trucks, LCVs and other vehicle types.

It's not just Seattle: city governments across America are making an effort to transition to electric mobility. They work together in the Climate Mayors EV Purchasing Collaborative, joining forces to leverage their procurement knowledge and buying power. Columbus, Ohio – to name just one other example – is well on the way to hitting its target of adding 300 electric cars to its city fleet.
