Global Fleet Survey 2021: EVs are top of mind for global fleet managers

What are the aims and intentions of multinational companies when it comes to their Fleet and Mobility Strategies? For the 6th time over a 10-year period, the Global Fleet Survey provides answers to that question.

For this year’s edition, the Global Fleet Survey polled a total of 124 multinational companies, collectively representing 1 million passenger cars, 200,000 LCVs and more than 8 million employees. Not only is that a record; it also increases the Survey’s value as a benchmarking tool for the industry. The highlights of the Global Fleet Survey 2021 are published in a comprehensive E-Book.

This E-Book is available in the Global Fleet Knowledge Center, where you can also download the full results of the Global Fleet Survey 2021.

The Survey consisted of 70 questions, focusing on corporate sourcing and strategy intentions for six chapters:

Profile

  • On average, respondents manage a fleet of 8,447 vehicles. That is a significantly smaller figure than in the 2020 result (9,373 vehicles). This confirms anecdotal evidence that fleet sizes are shrinking.

Global Strategy

  • Global Fleet Management is still overwhelmingly led by Procurement teams (69%), which confirms the importance of cost-saving and cost-efficiency as guiding principles today and in the near future. Compared to last year, HR has lost ground, as only 13% of the global fleet managers report to this department (compared to 27% in 2020).
  • Looking at the disciplines that are managed globally, Sustainability for the first time has overtaken Savings and Safety. The importance of Sustainability is further demonstrated when by the answer to the question about the most important fleet management topics in 2021: Selecting the right powertrain comes out on top.

Fleet Management

  • 60% of respondents have a clear annual cost saving requirement, balancing between 7.8% cost savings for Europe and 7.2% for North America to 5.5% for the APAC fleet

Finance & Leasing

  • Full-service or Operating leasing remains the preferred finance solution in Europe. Compared to 2020 however, it is now also the desired acquisition model in Latin America, Asia Pacific and Africa Middle East.
  • Almost half of all respondents (48%) is on the lookout for a new vehicle leasing vendor.

Car Manufacturers

  • Electrification is now the main criterion for global fleet managers to select an OEM. In the 2020 it was only the 5th reason for OEM shortlisting. Lead times is in second place, due to post-pandemic contract extensions and the semiconductor chip shortage.
  • 90% of global fleet managers expect the number of EVs to go up in Europe, compared to just 83% in last year’s survey. However, for the first time there is also a significant increase in preference for EVs outside of Europe: 57% in North America, 39% in APAC, 33% in AME and 31% in Latam.

Mobility

  • Most fleet managers expect their leasing company to offer mobility solutions. Car sharing companies and tech specialists complete the Top 3 of expected mobility partners.

Methodology

The Global Fleet Survey was conducted from 16 July until 7 September 2021 via an online questionnaire with 70 questions. In total, 124 completed questionnaires were used for the analysis.
