Average business mileage at 65% of pre-pandemic levels

Seven months into the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States economy is still having its activity disrupted although the severity varies by region and industry. In its latest Mileage Trends Flash Report, Motus found average mileage has now reached 65% of pre-pandemic levels.

The report covers mileage and presents a view on economic growth and activity for different regions and industry sectors.

Regional variation is between 67% for the Western US and 60% for the Northeast, with the South and Midwest having grown to 66% of pre-pandemic levels. For the whole nation, recovery has hit 65%.

Variance is much wider among industry sectors. Mileage trended upward rapidly in most industries in May and June as the country was reopening and demand was rising. Recent months have seen more volatility. Some results:

  • Food & beverage: 79% of pre-pandemic levels
  • Construction & building materials: 73%
  • Machinery: 63%
  • Business services: 60%
  • Hospitals & healthcare: 60%
  • Pharmaceutical, biotech & medical devices: 56%
  • Retail: 55%
  • Energy & environmental: 45%
  • Automotive: 45%
  • Manufacturing: 44%
