CFE Mexico awards 10,000 vehicle leasing tender

Mexico’s federal electricity commission CFE has awarded vehicle leasing contracts worth a total of MXN 1.17 billion (US$62.7 million) to four local companies.

The contracts, which involve nearly 10,000 vehicles in all, contemplate one-year leasing agreements which will be signed in April. The tender was carried out in 42 lots and is part of a larger four-year leasing plan.

Arrendomóvil, based in Mexico City, won the most lots by far and will be supplying 8,903 vehicles. The three other awardees are Lumo Financiera del Centro providing 520 vehicles, Jet Van Car Rental (323 vehicles), and Value Arrendadora (110 vehicles). Among the other bidders were A2daht Health México, Casanova Vallejo, and Integra Arrenda.

Unlike the utility’s previous contract, CFE employees will no longer have vehicles at their disposal at all times of the day. Instead, “all vehicles must stay overnight on company grounds,” says Miguél Lopez who is cooperate coordinator for the Administration and Finance department of CFE.

Lopez also highlighted that CFE will save nearly MXN 756 million per year with the new contracts, equivalent to approximately MXN 3 million when considering its overall plan to contract services for four years (2020-2024).

While the annual cost of the last agreement – signed in 2014 – was MXN 1.93 billion, this year’s agreement is MXN 1.17 billion (39% less). The last agreement, however, entailed 10,314 vehicles (4.6% more), local paper Energía a Debate reported.

CFE’s last multi-year contract was signed with local company Casanova Renting. Although the agreement expired last year, a six-year extension (July-December 2019) was signed. Among the vehicles in this agreement, according to local paper El Sol de México, were compact sedans (average price of MXN 6,000/m) and double-cab pickups (average price of MXN 15,743/m).

CFE currently has a fleet of 36,971 vehicles, of which 26,741 are owned by the company (72%) and 10,226 are leased (28%).
