Queensland to launch on-demand transport services

Queensland, Australia is launching on-demand transport services to complement its public transport system. The new pre-booked and shared travel offeringswill deliver a more flexible and convenient alternative to the fixed routes and timetables of the state’s traditional bus network.

Via, the specialist in demand-responsive public transport, will provide the technology behind Queensland’s new services. The company now has more than 150 partnerships in more than 25 countries.

Matt Longland, Head of TransLink, the public transit agency for Queensland, said: “On-demand services are a complementary form of public transport, filling the gap in the mobility spectrum between a regular service bus route and a variable, highly-personalised service offered by taxis or other booked hire services."

He added that the state is also investing $371 million investment in Smart Ticketing.

Trials of the new technology will start next year.
