China JV between BMW and Mercedes-Benz to deliver premium charging experience

In a move towards sustainable transportation solutions, BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. and Mercedes-Benz Group China Ltd. have announced a 50:50 joint venture in China. This venture aims to operate a high-power charging network, providing Chinese customers with premium charging services tailored to meet the evolving needs of the EV market.

Leveraging their extensive expertise in global and Chinese charging operations, as well as their profound understanding of the Chinese new energy vehicle landscape, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are committed to delivering fast, convenient, and reliable charging solutions. This collaboration is poised to improve the public charging experience in line with the image of the brands.

The joint venture's ambitious plans include establishing a network comprising at least 1,000 high-power charging stations equipped with approximately 7,000 high-power charging piles by the end of 2026. These stations will feature state-of-the-art charging technologies, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility with a wide range of EV models. The rollout will commence in 2024, targeting key NEV regions before expanding nationwide.

One of the key highlights of this initiative is the focus on customer-centric features. While the premium charging network will be accessible to the general public, customers of BMW Group and Mercedes-Benz Group can expect exclusive benefits. These perks include plug & charge functionality and online reservation systems, offering a convenient and digitally integrated charging experience.

Furthermore, the joint venture is committed to sustainability. It aims to procure electricity from renewable sources wherever feasible, underscoring its dedication to environmental responsibility. By prioritizing eco-friendly practices, the venture seeks to create a sustainable charging ecosystem that aligns with China's broader clean energy goals.

However, it's important to note that the success of this collaboration hinges on regulatory approval. Both BMW Brilliance Automotive and Mercedes-Benz Group are awaiting clearance from regulatory authorities before proceeding with their plans.
