Alfa Stelvio goes electric
Not even 3 months ago, the late Sergio Marchionne revealed his ambitious plans for the Alfa Romeo brand. By 2022, FCA’s sporty near-premium make is to have 6 plug-in hybrids in its line-up, plus an all-electric version of each model. Alfa’s portfolio will also welcome two new SUVs: one that slots below the Stelvio, and one that is bigger.
In the meantime, Italian media have reported that the Cassino plant is readying itself to build the all-electric Stelvio. This will probably not be ready before 2020, the year in which OEMs are multiplying their efforts to get their weighted fleet average below 95 g/km of CO2.
However, the Stelvio is to mildly electrify its powertrains next year already. The existing engines will receive a 48V system including a belt-driven alternator – starter and a small lithium battery to cut emissions and fuel consumption.
