Audi more than doubled its South African charging network

Having deployed an ambitious electrification plan in South Africa, Audi has more than doubled its electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the country, increasing the number from 33 to 76.

Audi has completed two phases of installing EV chargers in South Africa with its partner Rubicon. The second phase also included the instalment of South Africa's first direct-current (DC) 200kW charging station, according to Techcentral. The carmaker has invested R45 million (€2,380 million) in the last two years to expand the charging network in South Africa.

Most of the newly installed 43 charging stations are in Gauteng (15), the Western W Cape (11), and the Eastern Cape (10) regions of the country. The 200 kW charger is accessible at the Mall of Africa shopping centre in Johannesburg, where Audi says an e-tron GT can be recharged in 15 minutes.

Besides the super-fast 200kW charger, the second phase saw the instalment of four 100 kW, eight 60 Kw, five 25 kW and 25 22 kW charging stations. According to Audi, a total of 76 ultra-fast EV chargers represent 28% of the public chargers in the country.
