Hyundai and Shell expand partnership on EV strategy and hydrogen energy

Hyundai Motor Company and British energy giant Shell have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand their partnership to offer lower carbon emission mobility services through EV infrastructure and promoting hydrogen power for fleet customers.

The strategic deal will help Shell hasten its transformation from fossil fuels to renewable energies and provide charging solutions and mobility services to Hyundai's premium vehicle division, Genesis. Hyundai and Shell also plan to build integrated hydrogen solutions, focusing on hydrogen infrastructure.

After several years of collaboration, the agreement will converge two companies' expertise on EV charging, hydrogen and digital technologies. The goals of the new partnership include:

  • Shell Recharge Solutions will become the charging solutions and mobility service provider for Genesis,
  • Building up an EV network and providing related services in key markets, including Europe, US and Asia,
  • Hyundai Motor to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell trucks and Shell to offer hydrogen infrastructure for fleets,
  • Hyundai to support Shell's hydrogen infrastructure in California to meet increasing demand,
  • Discovering opportunities to supply Shell renewable energy infrastructure through Hyundai's global facilities.

Towards zero-emission

Hyundai wants to boost transformation towards alternative energies through the new road map, including making all new car models of Genesis carbon-free by 2025. By 2030, Genesis' complete line-up is expected to be 100% carbon-free.

Strategy on integrated hydrogen solutions and enhancing EV charging solutions also aims to help Hyundai reach its RE100 (Renewable Energy 100%) target, a global initiative led by the Climate Group.

The expanded charging services will first become active in the UK, Germany and Switzerland, enabling Hyundai customers to charge on the go, at home and Shell charging points.
