CES 2022: Stellantis to boost software transformation with Amazon

In a major step towards becoming sustainable in mobility technologies, Stellantis has announced a collaboration with Amazon to deploy the global merchant's web services technology in its vehicles. The deal will also allow the car maker to develop connected technologies and train next-generation software engineers.

The collaboration will bring the technology and services of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon Devices and Amazon Last Mile to Stellantis to accelerate connected and personalized in-vehicle experiences, thus helping the car maker transform into a software-driven development and engineering company. The two companies will be developing software-based products and services to be updated Over-the-Air (OTA).

Amazon's technologies will be delivered to Stellantis' new digital cabin platform, STLA SmartCockpit, and Stellantis will also adopt AWS as the cloud provider for vehicle platforms. Amazon will benefit from the collaboration by becoming the first commercial customer for the new Ram ProMaster Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) in 2023, expanding its sustainable delivery network.

Managing vehicles through voice control

The software defines STLA SmartCockpit to offer a personalized and intuitive experience through AI-enhanced entertainment features, Alexa voice control and navigation, maintenance, e-commerce and payment services.

Stellantis will have the flexibility to build custom, brand and vehicle-specific capabilities over Amazon technologies and an intelligent and adaptive interface designed to suit customers' individual needs and preferences while offering access to the app store.

Stellantis customers will have the ability to monitor and manage their home through Amazon's smart home and security services, as well as their vehicles from Alexa-enabled devices at home or the Alexa smartphone app.

The new generation digital cockpits and personalized connected devices will be developed by Mobile Drive, the joint venture of Stellantis and Foxconn.

Moving to cloud by AWS

Stellantis will be moving the vehicle data pipeline of its brands in all geographies to AWS while working with Amazon to build next-generation, cloud-based infrastructure for vehicle platforms. Another goal of Stellantis is to launch a new product benefiting AWS machine learning to boost personalization and provide better predictive maintenance.

Stellantis recently announced the launch of a Software Academy under its strategy to reach €20 billion in incremental annual revenues by 2030 through software-enabled vehicles. To achieve this goal, the company will train 5,000 engineers in AWS related cloud technologies by 2024.
