Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance reveals future EV roadmap

Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi have consolidated their alliance, which was first announced in May 2020, by revealing the "Alliance 2030" roadmap, aiming to accelerate their electrification plans and thrive on the mobility value chain.

The Alliance 2030 roadmap can be defined as a common guide toward pure-EV and intelligent and connected mobility. "The alliance is accelerating to lead the mobility revolution and deliver more value to customers, our people, our shareholders and all our stakeholders", says Jean-Dominique Senard, Chairman of the Alliance.

The roadmap plans include developing five new EV platforms, producing 35 new EV models and advancing the solid-state battery technology. Under this strategy, every brand will have its duties while the platforms, resources and battery technology will be shared to reduce costs and consumption.

The common use of the platforms will be increased to 80% in 2026 from 60% today for the combined 90 models. Increasing the focus on core markets, The Alliance will release two new models under Mitsubishi Motors in Europe.

Five common EV platforms

The alliance has revealed that it will invest a total of €23 billion on electrification for the next five years. The five platforms will produce 90% of the new EV models, from commercial LCVs to compact EVs:

Two platforms, based on advanced technology and capacity, will handle the majority of the production for the alliance.

A modular CMF-EV is a technologically innovative platform that will benchmark the new generation EVs. Designed to integrate the specific elements of a 100% electric powertrain, the CMF-EV will produce new models with a high-performance motor and ultra-thin battery. The platform will produce 1.5 million vehicles per year.

CMF-BEV, which will be launched in 2024, will produce new models up to 400 km range with an advanced aerodynamics performance, reducing costs by 33% and power consumption by more than 10%, compared to the current Renault ZOE. CMF-BEV will produce 250,000 vehicles per year for Renault, Alpine and Nissan brands.

25 million vehicles on the cloud

The Alliance 2030 roadmap sets goals for developing a common all-solid-state battery technology (ASSB) under the supervision of Nissan. By 2030, the alliance aims to reach 220 GWh battery production capacity while reducing battery costs by 65% in 2028. Mass production of ASSD units will commence in mid-2028.

The alliance will offer charging services through two strategic partnerships. Mobilise Power Solutions will provide optimised recharging infrastructure and related services, while Ionity will allow customers to access ultra-fast charging networks in Europe.

The alliance plans to exceed 10 million vehicles on the road by 2026 across 45 Alliance models and connect more than 5 million vehicles to the cloud, up from 3 million today.

Software enhancements will equip all Alliance vehicles with the Google ecosystem. In 2025, the alliance plans to launch its first full software-defined vehicle, enabling Over-the-Air (OTA) technology for any updates throughout the vehicle's lifecycle.
