Colombia car sales strong amidst struggling neighbors

Colombia’s automobile industry is doing quite well, considering the struggling markets in Latin American neighbors such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela.

In August, the country hit a sales record with 23,306 vehicles, up 8.7% compared to the same month last year. Volkswagen led with a 46.3% share of the market, followed by Renault (38%) and Suzuki (21%). Premium vehicle sales rose 16.8% year-over-year led by Mercedes Benz (40.8% share), BMW (32.3%), and Audi (23.9%).

Meanwhile, thanks to the new Nissan Leaf and the BMW i3, electric and hybrid vehicle sales are starting to make a larger impact on the market. According to the country’s sustainable mobility association Andemos, 222 were sold in August (99 full-electric), being 327% up year-on-year.
