Brazil vehicle sales on slow comeback

Vehicle sales are making a slow comeback in Brazil, according to data from the country's motor vehicles distribution federation Fenabrave, citing online transactions as the reason.

In May, 56,639 light vehicles were registered, 10.3% up from April. Sales records, however, were down 76% year-over-year. Meanwhile, in the January-May period, 640,500 registrations were reported, down 38% from the same period in 2019.

Keep in mind that many of the country’s Detran (local traffic department) offices – including the country’s largest in São Paulo - have been closed during the COVID-19 health crisis so many vehicles were unable to get registered despite being sold. Regardless, sales are still seen significantly lower than pre-pandemic months (nearly 200,000 units).
