Amazon buys 20,000 Mercedes Sprinter vans

In its new plant in North Charleston (South Carolina), Mercedes-Benz has started producing the first of 20,000 Sprinter vans destined for Amazon.

The fleet, specifically branded with the online retailer’s logo, will constitute the backbone of Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner programme. This will enable small businesses to lease vans for deliveries through third-party fleet management companies.

The provision of discounted access to vehicles, fuel, insurance, uniforms and delivery technology is explicitly aimed at helping small businesses across the United States, Amazon said in June. In fact, the move helps relieve pressure on Amazon’s package-delivery needs, which have boomed.

By making such a large bulk purchase of Sprinter vans, Amazon has become the world’s number one buyer of the model, Mercedes said.
