Amazon places largest electric-van order ever
Amazon has placed an order for 100,000 electric vans from Rivian Automotive in a bid to make the company’s fleet run entirely on renewable energy.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos made the announcement at an event in Washington, DC last Thursday where he unveiled Amazon’s plans to tackle climate change.
The first electric-van prototypes are expected to hit the roads in 2020 and the first vans should be operational by 2021. By 2024, Mr Bezos expects 100,000 Rivian vans in Amazon’s fleet.
Rivian is a start-up that has been developing electric vehicles for some time, though it is yet to start commercial production. In November 2018, the company unveiled a pick-up truck and an SUV, but little news has come out of Rivian since.
Earlier this year, Rivian secured additional funds from a series of major players including Amazon. A few months later, Ford invested $500 million in Rivian.
