GM readies next-gen EVs with LG Chem partnership

Following the announcement of the US$2.3 billion joint venture between General Motors and South Korean chemicals company LG Chem last week, we can now look forward to the construction of a new electric vehicle (EV) battery cell plant in the U.S. next year.

With construction slated to begin in mid-2020 in the state of Ohio, the plant (annual capacity of more than 30GWh) is expected to be one of the largest in the world.

It will help GM in its plan to launch its next generation of EVs. The first models should start arriving in 2021 and at least 20 new EVs are planned by 2023. “The new facility will help us scale production and dramatically enhance EV profitability and affordability”, says GM CEO Mary Barra (pictured).
