Stellantis, Samsung SDI to start battery Gigafactory construction in US

Automaker Stellantis and Samsung SDI have announced an agreement to jointly build a battery manufacturing facility in the state of Indiana, starting in late 2022, continuing the EV battery production wave in the United States.

The battery Gigafactory will be built in the city of Kokoma where Stellantis already has three plants (engine, casting, and transmission). Approximately US$2.5 billion in investment is planned with a potential to gradually increase to US$3.1bn, EV news portal Inside EVs reported.

Battery production is expected to start in the first semester of 2025. Initial manufacturing capacity of 23 GWh annually is expected with a target to eventually increase output to 33 GWh (potentially more depending on demand).

The long-term electrification and software developement strategy for Stellantis globally calls for investments of some US$35bn through 2025.
