ABB to transition 10,000-strong fleet to EVs by 2030

Global technology company ABB has committed to electrify its 10,000-strong international fleet by 2030 and to power the electric vehicles with renewable energy.

In the UK, ABB will transition its 500-plus company cars to electric by 2025, and it has already started to convert its 700 company cars in Sweden to battery power.

As a manufacturer, one of the industries in which ABB is involved is the production of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, ranging from AC wallboxes to ultra-rapid DC chargers.

Green power

To power its entire business, including recharging its own fleet, the company will source 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030. Last year just under one-third (32 per cent) of the power it used was certified green or generated by ABB’s own solar plants, and in Switzerland the company already sources all of its electricity from renewable sources.

In a further step towards a zero emission future, ABB has committed to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030, and to partner with its customers and suppliers to help reduce their emissions.

Targets backed by science

The company’s own reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which has confirmed that they are in line with the 1.5°C scenario of the Paris Agreement. ABB has also joined the Business Ambition for 1.5°C Campaign, a global coalition of UN agencies, business and industry leaders, led by the UNGC, andjoined three initiatives led by the non-profit Climate Group: the EV100, to transition to electric vehicles; the RE100, to source renewable energy; and the EP100, to establish energy efficiency targets and deploy energy management systems at its sites.

Theodor Swedjemark, ABB Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer, said: “We want to lead by example across our own operations and the confirmation that our ambitious targets are now scientifically verified is an important milestone for the company. We believe that the combination of technology and empowered people is key to reducing emissions and avoiding the further heating of our planet.”
