Mass production of hydrogen fuel cell

Bosch (Germany) and Powercell (Sweden) have signed a pact to facilitate mass production of hydrogen fuel cells.

Both big companies signed an agreement to jointly mass produce hydrogen fuel cells for electrifying heavy-duty commercial vehicles. The joint venture must provide an answer to European Union legislation for trucks to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 15% by 2025, and 30% by 2030.

Hybrid and electric powertrains are the way out for the industry, however considering the heavy weight of battery cells, hydrogen fuel cells might provide the answer. In addition, they take less time to refuel than electric batteries, making them more suitable for vehicles which need to be on the road for a long time.

And if we can be bold and look at the long-term: could increasing investment in hydrogen fuel cells also result in economies of scale and lower the overall price, as was the case with electric car batteries?
