Brazil starts 2018 seeking new EV recharge law

Following pressure by owners of electric and hybrid cars, Brazil’s senate has approved PLC 65/2014, a bill that obliges electric utilities to install recharging units at strategic points throughout cities.

If the bill becomes law, vehicle owners may request the installation of a recharging point in commercial and residential buildings and on public roads, with the authorization of local authorities, local automobile portal Clikmotors reported.

The consumption of the energy, as well as the cost of installation, will be borne by the energy users. They will be charged a prepaid rate or through a separate energy bill.

Drawn up by congressman Heuler Cruvinel, the bill is now being forwarded to Senator Flexa Ribeiro for an amendment regarding regulations on the installation of the recharging units and to the house of representatives’ infrastructure commission for approval.
