Taxi plows into pedestrians ahead of Russia World Cup games

Just ahead of World Cup games on Sunday (June 17), a taxi-driver in Moscow accelerated onto the sidewalk and ran over several pedestrians before hitting a traffic sign.

Although cars hitting pedestrians are not new, it has been in the spotlight in recent months, further pressuring legislators to require collision avoidance systems in cars and increasing the demand for these types of systems in new models.

Major carmakers in the U.S. agreed to install automatic emergency brake systems (AEB) in nearly all new passenger cars by September 2022, Global Fleet reported in March.

The taxi driver has been detained by police and the case is being investigated. A total of eight pedestrians were injured.
