2022 Latam crash tests results led by German, Japanese automakers
Automakers from Germany and Japan led with the most 5-star rating crash test results in Latin America in 2022, according to Latin NCAP, the Latin America and Caribbean regional car safety assessment program.
Among the 2022 models receiving a top-rating of five stars during the latest crash tests in December were those from Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, and Toyota.
Volkswagen Virtus (36.9 points)
Manufactured in India, the 4-door sedan received an 83% score for adult occupant protection, 92% for child occupant protection, 60% for the protection of pedestrians and vulnerable road users, and 82% for safety assist systems. It has six airbags.
Frontal impact: The protection offered to the driver and passenger head and neck was good, Driver's chest showed adequate protection and passenger chest showed good protection. Driver and passenger's knees showed good protection. Driver tibias and passengers left tibia showed adequate protection, passengers right tibia showed good protection. Footwell area was rated as stable and symmetrical between driver and passenger side. The bodyshell was rated as stable and capable of withstanding further loadings.
Side impact: Head, abdomen and pelvis protection was good, chest protection was adequate. Side Pole Impact: head, abdomen and pelvis protection was good, chest protection was marginal. Whiplash: the seat showed good protection to the adult neck. UN R32: the car meet the rear impact structure requirements. AEB City: the car offers AEB City meeting Latin NCAP technical and availability requirements. Rescue sheet: available according to Latin NCAP criteria.

Mitsubishi Outlander (36.2 points)
Manufactured in Japan, the 5-door SUV received a 90% score for adult occupant protection, 91% for child occupant protection, 55% for the protection of pedestrians and vulnerable road users, and 84% for safety assist systems. It has seven airbags.
Frontal impact: The protection offered to the driver and passenger head, neck and chest was good. Driver and passenger's knees showed marginal protection. Driver and passenger's tibias showed good protection. Footwell area was rated as stable and symmetrical between driver and passenger side. The bodyshell was rated as stable and capable of withstanding further loadings.
Side impact: Head, chest, abdomen and pelvis protection was good. Side Pole Impact: head, abdomen and pelvis protection was good, chest protection was adequate. The car is fitted with a centre airbag in some markets but not as standard. Whiplash: The seat showed good protection to the adult neck. UN R32: the car meet the rear impact structure requirements. AEB City: the car offers AEB City as optional, meeting Latin NCAP technical and availability requirements.

Toyota Corolla (33.3 points)
Manufactured in Brazil, Japan, Thailand, and the United States, the 4-door sedan received an 83% score for adult occupant protection, 92% for child occupant protection, 60% for the protection of pedestrians and vulnerable road users, and 82% for safety assist systems. It has seven airbags.
Frontal impact: The protection offered to the driver and passenger head and neck was good. Driver chest showed marginal protection and passenger chest showed good protection. Driver knees showed marginal protection as they can impact with dangerous structures behind the fascia and passenger’s knees showed good protection. Driver and passenger’s tibias showed adequate and good protection. Footwell area was rated as unstable. The bodyshell was rated as stable.

The other 2022 models receiving 5 stars ratings earlier in the year were the Nissan Qashqai (5-door SUV) with 6 airbags and 37.5 points, the Volkswagen Nivus (5-door SUV) with 6 airbags and 37 points, and the Chevrolet Tracker (5-door SUV) with 6 airbags and 36.4 points.
