Making safety first and foremost at Fleet LatAm Conference

Making fleet safety your number on priority is a must for many fleet managers and that was the topic during session two of the Fleet LatAm Conference in Mexico City Tuesday afternoon (Sep 24).

The session started with presentations from two experts, mobility consultant and head of Fleet LatAm training *Jose Luis Criado and *Fernando Cammarota who is Founder and Board Chairman of international traffic accident control company CEPA Mobility Care, CEPA.
Among other topics, they discussed accident rates and their impact on costs as well as fleet driver safety, in addition to benchmarking the Latam situation against North America and Europe.

“Safety has to be a main part of any mobility policy and we need to get real commitment from top management, and not just an expressed support” said Mr. Criado.

“Besides road infrastructure, accidents mainly stem from the vehicle itself or bad driver behavior, the latter two of which can be controlled by fleet operators. Remember that safety is a race with no finish line,” said Mr. Cammarota.

Therefore it's key to develop a programme that measures the current situation, sets a baseline, align objectives, and implement a programme that is supported by top management and combines information, with prevention and driver training, without forgetting the measuring and monitoring.

Their presentations were followed by testimonials from two fleet decision makers, being Teva Pharmaceuticals fleet manager *Jaime Bringas Garcia - also president of Mexico fleet managers association (AMAFA) - and Mauricio Acevedo who is head of corporate security and EHS at PMI.

They explained how they have been able to decrease accident rates and generate cost savings by implementing driver training programs in their companies.

Finally, one more talk about how to mandate corporate fleet insurance took place just before the lunch break, counting on the presentations from three experts.

They were *Ricardo de Bolle who is Global Business Development Director (Latin America) for Arval, AXA commercial and business development manager David Gil, and *Maurico Medina who is CEO of TIP Mexico. (pictured very top, left to right)

Although keeping your drivers as safe as possible is of utmost importance, unfortunate mishaps such as accidents and theft do occur so developing an insurance strategy to efficiently manage these incidents is crucial, especially in Latin America where many cars run without insurance.

In this session, our panelist mapped out some of the specific insurance services available for corporate fleet in the region with insight into more innovative solutions as insurance by pay per mile or based on driver behaviour.
