USA and Canada – slow off the mark but catching up

Public opinion towards renewable energy in North America is generally favourable. A 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 79% of Americans believe the benefits of renewable energy outweigh the costs. Additionally, 69% believe the government should invest more in renewable energy sources.

A 2023 survey by the Angus Reid Institute found that 80% of Canadians believe the government should do more to promote the use of renewable energy. Additionally, 72% of Canadians believe that renewable energy is a more reliable source of electricity than fossil fuels.

Government Goals

The Canadian government has set a target of 50% of new light-duty vehicle sales to be zero-emission by 2030 and 100% by 2040.

United States: The Biden administration has set a target of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2035, which will require a massive investment in renewable energy and electrification of the transportation sector. California has the most ambitious ZEV mandate in the United States, requiring that 75% of all new passenger vehicle sales be zero-emission by 2035.
