Siemens to power UAE’s EV charging corridor

The Ministry of Energy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has selected Siemens for its nationwide network of ultra-fast EV chargers (pictured left: the UAE Undersecretary for Energy Sharif al Olama; right: Helmut von Struve, CEO Siemens Middle East). This network is expected to boost EV adoption by addressing range anxiety, and in so doing lay the groundwork for transportation in the UAE to become more connected and more sustainable.

Specifically, Siemens will install 10 Sicharge D 160 kW ultra-fast chargers on a highway corridor throughout the country. The chargers have scalable power up to 300 kW and can be expanded for up to two extra charging cables. All are connected via the cloud, meaning they can be monitored and managed remotely.

Electrification is key to the UAE’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint, and the ‘charging corridor’ will speed up the change to EVs, the Ministry of Energy projects. The next phase of the project is to build an app for drivers to access and book chargers.

“With a peak efficiency of 96%, our public fast-charger Sicharge D is one of the most efficient high-power DC chargers currently available,” says Birgit Dargel, VP Sales eMobility at Siemens Smart Infrastructure.

This project is just the first of several expected to result from a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the UAE Ministry of Energy and Siemens, which establishes a long-term partnership on sustainability and digitalization. Apart from transport, other areas are smart building technologies, microgrid and industrial energy management, and intelligent substations on the grid edge.
