iFood, Tembici pushing zero-emission deliveries in Brazil

Brazilian micro-mobility company Tembici and local banking giant Itaú Unibanco are launching a station-based electric-bike sharing service in the city of Sao Paulo known as Bike Sampa.

Bike Sampa, of which already offers conventional non-electric bikes, will be receiving 500 e-bikes during the first days of June. They have an assisted pedal system which drives the bike motor at a top speed of 25km/h by peddling. The rental fee starts at R$2.50 (US$0.52) for 15 minutes.

Besides the city of Sao Paulo, Tembici has partnered up with multinational food delivery service iFood under the iFood Pedal program. It is part of an overall initiative to provide green deliveries in six Brazilian cities (Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Recife, Salvador, and Bahia) with 2,500 e-bikes.

Bike sharing service in Brazil has increased 400% in the last 10 years and with the 3 million or so in bike deliveries by Bike Sampa to date, the service has cut CO2 emissions by more than 5,000 tons, according to a Tembici micro-mobility study.
