Audi expands traffic light connectivity in the U.S.

Audi is expanding the coverage of Traffic Light Information to Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. TLI is an Audi-first technology that communicates between vehicles and traffic signals, minimising stop-and-go driving.

Audi introduced TLI in 2016, initially in the cities of Portland (Oregon) and Las Vegas. At that time, only a handful of traffic signals were connected. Now, there are more than 22,000 in the United States alone, across 20 major metropolitan areas and 60 cities.

Canada and Europe

More signals are added monthly. The addition of Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco marks a major expansion of the system. There is also some availability of TLI in Canada and Europe as well.

TLI is offered to Audi drivers with an Audi connect PRIME or PLUS subscription. They get notifications called Time to Green and Green Light Recommended Speed Advisory. This allows them to ride a ‘green wave’, with traffic lights turning from stop to go as they arrive.

C-V2X connectivity

According to research by both Audi itself and by the US Department of Transportation, reducing stop-and-go driving an increase fuel efficiency by up to 15%.

Audi aims to maintain its lead in advanced cellular-vehicle-to-everything (or C-V2X) connectivity. A recent pilot project in northern Virginia aims to enhance the safety of vulnerable road users, and warn drivers as they approach school zones and school buses.
