Brazil seeks to prohibit petrol, diesel vehicles

On Wednesday (12 January), Brazil’s constitution and justice commission CCJ approved a bill aimed at prohibiting the sale of new petrol and diesel-powered cars in the country as of January 2030.

As such, electric vehicles as well as those that run on bio-energy such as ethanol will be permitted.

The bill also includes the prohibition of all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles on roads starting in 2040. There will be exceptions to the rule such as collection cars and those for government officials such as diplomats and foreign visitors.

The new legislation is currently being voted on by the country’s environment commission CMA, according to congressional news service Agência Senado.
