Brazil’s EV manufacturers pressured by energy efficiency goals

For electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in Brazil to receive any game changing tax breaks, they will need to reach energy efficiency goals which are unlikely to occur in the next year or so, says Paulo Miguel Junior who is the national council president for the country’s automobile renter’s association ABLA.

The sentiment is shared by several OEMs. According to statements last week from GM, BYD, and Toyota executives, the fiscal benefits under Brazil's new ROTA 2030 policy are not as robust as expected as they depend on strict energy efficiency and vehicle weight standards.

“ROTA 2030, however, does benefit the automobile industry by pushing for research and development and new innovations,” Miguel Junior told Global Fleet, adding that this should result in better cars coming into the market soon.
