Mexico City incentives enticing companies to push electromobility

Several companies in Mexico have shown that they are committed to expanding electric technology in their last-mile vehicles as Mexico City government head Claudio Sheinbaum has presented an Environmental Self-Regulation and Electromobility program for the nation’s capital. 

Among the companies are food and beverage groups Grupo Bimbo and Grupo Modelo, the British American Tobacco company (BAT), manufacturing company FEMSA, as well as Megaflux, a local company offering one stop solutions for electric vehicles focused on mass transport and last mile delivery using proprietary technology.

A total of 520 electric vehicles were registered in the program as of June and the plan as of now calls for a total of 2,500 units, according to the city’s Environmental Department (Sedema).

"The commitment calls for transitioning 5% of fleet to electrified vehicles each year," says Sedema Secretary Marina Robles García (pictured left) who invites all companies doing business in Mexico City (CDMX) to join the self-regulation program. 

By joining the program, the Environmental Department will recognize the sustainability efforts of the companies by exempting them from vehicle circulation restrictions in Mexico City, local mobility news service Portal Movilidad said in a report, thus opening-up many opportunities for manufacturers of electrified last-mile mobility vehicles such as Megaflux (mentioned above).

Meanwhile, according to the report, advances in electromobility for public transport is also underway in Mexico City. According to the city’s Mobility Department SEMOVI, 55 more electric buses will soon be circulating on streets in areas where trolleybus networks are not available. An acquisition of 500 trolleybuses is underway in the city.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that a program to replace the city’s taxis is also in the works. It involves granting US$5,000 to make the move from an internal combustion engine (CEI) vehciel to an electric vehicle (EV).
