US lawmakers consider hiking Chinese vehicle import tariffs

A bipartisan group of United States lawmakers want the federal government to hike the current 25% tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles being imported into the country from Mexico.
A letter has been sent to US Trade policy promoter USTR (United Stated Trade Representative) asking them to consider launching a new Section 301 investigation into Chinese vehicles and developing an action plan to eliminate the harm they could pose to the American automotive industry and American workers, Reuters said in a report.
In related news, the European Commission in September launched an investigation into whether to impose punitive tariffs to protect European Union producers against cheaper Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports.
