Following telematics: the future of connected fleets

The Connected Fleets Conference kicked off with Ptolemus Consulting Group’s Alberto Lodieu informing the audience about the evolution of telematics and connectivity.

Strong growth

Alberto started by confirming what Fleet Managers intuitively knew: the connectivity market is growing. By 2025, 90 million commercial vehicles will be connected and the market will be worth close to USD 20 billion. Whereas most devices, leading up to today, were retrofitted, the new trend is in favour of line-fitted telematics. As the market is growing, the number of suppliers has grown massively between 2011 and 2015, followed by a wave of consolidation from 2015 to 2018.

Cross contamination

The industry is also widening from traditional telematics suppliers to various types of new suppliers. Fuel companies, OEMs are moving into the telematics industry, but also telematics vendors are expanding services into new areas. As a direct result of this trend, competition is becoming bigger.

The client benefits from this trend: telematics vendors are nowadays no longer expected to offer only vehicle tracking; measuring driver behaviour being a good example.
