China and Japan choose local charging standard
News coming out of Asia may not be good for the European companies trying to establish a uniform charging system for electric cars across the world. Two fast-charging standards – the Japanese CHAdeMO and Chinese GB/T – may be harmonized into a single next-generation ultra-fast charging standard with retro compatibility to older CHAdeMO and GB/T cars.
This is being reported by Insideev’s which goes on to say that the Memorandum of Understanding between CHAdeMO Association and the China Electricity Council for co-development of a joint standard was being signed on August 28th in Beijing. Both of the countries’ governments are believed to be in favour of this move.
The two standards are relatively similar and utilize CAN for communication between the charger and the car.
