CES 2022: Goodyear reveals 70% eco-friendly tyre

Goodyear concept tyre.

At CES 2022, Goodyear showcased a prototype tyre that is made up of 70% sustainable materials. It's an important step towards the company's goal of producing a 100% renewable tyre by 2030.

Aiming to distance itself from petroleum-based products, Goodyear used a variety of materials in the prototype, including recycled plastic bottles and surplus soybean oil from the animal feed and food industries.

To further its decarbonisation target, Goodyear also created black carbon compounds from CO2, plant-based oil and methane rather than from petroleum. These compounds will increase the durability of tyres. Three types of black carbon used in the tyre come from renewable sources.

Goodyear also announced that it plans to test an airless tyre for small delivery robots, and Starship Technologies will test the tyres in autonomous packaging and food delivery robots.

Airless tyres are designed specifically for autonomous delivery fleets to be more durable and require less maintenance.
