Ford to offer Canopy in 2023, AI-powered security cams

Together with US security firm ADT, Ford will offer Canopy in 2023, an AI-powered connected on-board security camera system with a corresponding mobile app to be used for a variety of vehicle makes and models.

Through the joint venture (60% Ford, 40% ADT), offerings will integrate the Safe by ADT platform. It provides professional monitoring and helps businesses protect valuable work equipment in vehicles by identifying and reporting credible threats while reducing false alarm signals.

Canopy will build and sell its first product and subscription service in early 2023 to protect cargo areas of high-volume commercial trucks and vans in the U.S. and U.K., including the Ford F-150 (pictured), F-150 Lightning, Transit vans and E-Transit.

As it can also be used by executive fleet or individual owners seeking to strengthen security inside and outside vehicles, plans then call for extending Canopy to other Ford vehicles and even to factory-vehicle integrations with other automakers over time.

The FBI estimates that stolen work equipment in the United States cost more than US$7.4 billion in 2020.
