Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis in partnership with Factorial Energy to produce solid-state batteries

Mercedes-Benz and Factorial Energy have announced a partnership to develop next-generation solid-state batteries to reach longer vehicle range and faster charging times. Two companies plan to unveil the prototype in 2022. 

The collaboration aims to push the "Electric Only" strategy one step further by combining its battery expertise with the technical know-how of Factorial Energy in solid-state batteries. The first step is to develop battery cell technologies and extend the research to include entire battery modules.

Double the energy with new batteries

A limited number of vehicles will be equipped with the next-generation solid-state battery technology in the following five years. The goal of the partnership is to encourage electric mobility further and meet carbon neutralization goals. Solid-state batteries will provide almost twice the energy compared to lithium-ion batteries and significantly improve safety thanks to the electrodes used. Mercedes-Benz will also place a representative in Factorial Energy's board of directors through acquiring an equity stake. 

Also Stellantis anounced the signing of a joint development agreement to advance Factorial’s high-voltage traction solid-state battery technology. The agreement also includes a strategic investment from Stellantis.
