Toyota develops “Total-care Service” for Ride-hailing Companies

Toyota Motor Corporation announced it has set up its “Total-care Service”, as a pioneering set of mobility services specially designed for ride-hailing companies (think of initiatives such as Uber and Lyft).

The service will enable Toyota to leverage onboard telematics data through a shared information platform and provide services such as fleet management, automotive insurance and vehicle maintenance packages, aiming to expand the use of ride-hailing services and enhance the driving experience for end users.

On the other hand, the Total-care Service allows ride-hailing companies to provide their driver-partners with more cost-efficient and timely maintenance services.

The service will be first rolled out in Singapore, where it will be offered for 1,500 Toyota vehicles owned by GrabRentals. Sequentially, the service will be offered to Grab-owned Toyota vehicles all over Southeast Asia.

Knowing that ride-hailing vehicles tend to accrue five times more mileage than privately-owned vehicles, it is clear that having them in safe, good working condition is key to provide adequate service to customers.

Using Toyota’s in-vehicle data-transmission device called Translog, the Total-care Service collects driving data and sends it to the Mobility Services Platform (MSPF), an information structure developed by the Japanese brand for vehicle connectivity.

Using these vehicle data, Grab (and other customers) will be able to provide its driver-partners with support and safety advice as needed, with fully optimized maintenance schedules for each vehicle, using driving and vehicle condition data.

Furthermore, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, a Toyota affiliated insurance company, will offer telematics-based automotive insurance to GrabRentals, allowing lower-cost insurance premiums.

Starting from Singapore, the aim of Toyota is to gradually expand this initiative globally, including other Southeast Asian countries.
