Nissan admits tampering with emission tests

Under pressure of the Japanese government, Renault’s ally has confirmed it has found falsified data from car exhaust emissions tests at its Japanese factories, stating that “emissions and fuel economy tests deviated from the prescribed testing environment".

It is not known how many cars are involved and whether they have been exported or strictly pertain to Japan. Nissan added that there would be a full and comprehensive investigation and that appropriate measures would be taken to stop any future recurrence.

Last year, the OEM recalled 1.2 million vehicles in its home country after regulators found that safety checks did not meet the national requirements. A subsequent investigation into why this was the case has now led to the latest revelations.
