Electric push at Mercedes-Benz Cars

In 2018, Daimler will complete its second battery factory in Kamenz, Germany. The company will also intensify preparations for its new electric SUV EQC at the Mercedes plant in Bremen.

These are only the latest efforts towards electrification at Mercedes-Benz. In 2017, the star-spangled car manufacturer set a series of ambitious goals for electromobility:

  • Electric hubs for electric vehicle and battery production are currently being built around the globe.
  • By 2022, Mercedes-Benz will offer its customers at least one electrified variant in all its model series, including plug-in hybrids, 48-volt systems and fully electric cars.
  • Mercedes-Benz will expand its electric fleet and its global battery production network to create a global battery network. Currently, that network consists of five battery factories on three continents.
  • Production of the EQC, an all-electric SUV, is set to start in 2019. It will also be manufactured at BBAC, Daimler's joint venture with BAIC.

Markus Schäfer, head of Production and Supply Chain at Mercedes-Benz Cars, commented: “Our electric vehicles will be built in six plants on three continents. We address every market segment: from the smart fortwo seater, to the large SUV. The battery is the key component of e-mobility. As batteries are the heart of our electric vehicles we put a great emphasis on building them in our own factories. (...) We are electrifying the future."
