Targa Telematics to expand connectivity solutions by acquiring Viasat Group

IoT solutions and connected mobility technology specialist Targa Telematics has acquired Viasat Group to expand its European operations.

Described as "an important step in terms of size and international presence" by Nicola De Mattia, Targa Telematics CEO, the 100% acquisition of share capital of Viasat Group will support Targa's expansion in its Italian homemarket and across Europe.

Viasat Group specialises in producing advanced electronic systems for the automotive sector and offers various services, including freight transport and logistics. Targa Telematics will apply the satellite info-telematics and IoT capabilities of the Viasat Group to improve the efficiency of commercial fleets while improving the security and protection of people and goods.

A global player is rising

The complete acquisition of the Viasat Group signals the emergence of a new player in the global IoT and connected mobility markets. The solutions will be available in eight countries in Europe: Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, the UK, Belgium, Poland and Romania.

The acquisition is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2023 and allow Targa Telematics" to offer a wide range of services in the smart mobility field for increasingly international projects", says De Mattia. Through strong coordination between teams, combined technical know-how and advanced technologies, both companies will play a crucial role in smart mobility, De Mattia adds.

Boosting the global data integration

Targa Telematics formed a strategic partnership with BMW and MINI last year, displaying the company's global ambitions. Underlining the significance of OEM data, Targa has been working to improve connected mobility services offered by its digital platforms through seamless data integration. Bypassing in-vehicle hardware installation, Targa aims to boost telematics solutions by gathering and analysing manufacturer data.
