Waymo launches first commercial self-driving service

Ten years after the company was founded as the Google self-driving project, Waymo has launched the first commercial self-driving services. This new service, called Waymo One, is gradually being made available to more users. In a first stage, Waymo-trained drivers will supervise the Waymo One vehicles.

The self-driving Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid minivans have entered service in Phoenix and four of its suburbs on 5 December. The vehicles area available 24 hours a day and can be hailed using an app.

“We’re talking the next step in our journey with the introduction of our commercial self-driving service,” said John Krafcik, CEO, Waymo. “Self-driving technology is new to many, so we’re proceeding carefully with the comfort and convenience or our riders in mind.”

For the time being, human safety drivers will be on board of all Waymo One vehicles. It is unclear when they will no longer be required.

In spite of having driven 10 million self-driven miles on public roads, this new service marks the first time Waymo is charging money for its services.

Waymo did not disclose more details about the new commercial service.
