Ford designs perfume reminiscent of petrol

What would you miss if you switched to an EV? Ford surveyed its drivers, and the main answer was: the smell of petrol. While 20% said they would miss it ‘the most’, in all 70% said they would miss it ‘to some degree’.
So, the car manufacturer went a little bit outside its core business and… developed a perfume to help those drivers transition. The perfume’s name? Mach-Eau. We had to double-check the calendar, but no: it’s not April 1st. Apparently, this is a real thing.

True enough, a whiff of petrol has its appeal. According to Ford’s survey, it’s more popular than wine or cheese, and as popular as new-book smell. However, Mach-Eau, designed by fragrance consultancy Olfiction, is not supposed to smell exactly like petrol.

In a statement, Ford clarifies that the perfume, “rather than just smelling like petrol (…) is designed to please the nose of any wearer; a high-end fragrance that fuses smoky accords, aspects of rubber and even an ‘animal’ element to give a nod to the Mustang heritage.”

Perhaps most bizarrely, Ford is not marketing the perfume. It says the scent was created solely to “help dispel myths around EVs and convince traditional car enthusiasts of the potential of EVs.” The scent, which was launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, earlier this month in the UK, is mainly a marketing vehicle for Ford’s new all-electric Mustang Mach-E GT. Mach-E, Mach-Eau... Now we get it.
