South America EV production enthusiasm on the rise

General Motors’ first-ever electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Latin America could be in Colombia, according to local media.

President of GM International Shipan Amin and president of GM South America Santiago Chamorro have met with Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro in Bogota to discuss the matter, according to information from Colombia state-owned TV channel Canal 1.

Owing to the development of emission-free zones and recharging infrastructure as well as EV purchase incentives, Bogota is a leader in Latin America’s sustainable mobility movement. If gone through with, the GM facility in Colombia could be Latam’s first from an American OEM.

Meanwhile, further down South, Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors estimates that some 100,000 EVs should be produced this year (2023) out of its recently acquired facility in Brazil and Chinese automaker Chery is also planning to build an EV production facility in Argentina.
