8 days to Geneva: Peugeot unveils electric 208, diesel not ditched

The B segment may not be the one that generates the most margin, it is the segment that ensures volume. The 208 is therefore a very important vehicle for PSA, even more so because it is the first vehicle in its segment to be available with an all-electric powertrain that gets you more than 300 km of WLTP range (450 NEDC).

The battery of the e-208 holds 50 kWh and can be fast-charged using at 100 kW a CCS (combined charging standard) plug. AC charging at 7.4 kW (single phase) takes 8 hours from empty to full or 5 hours and 15 minutes if you have three-phase AC to feed your 11 kW wallbox.

The e-208's battery is integrated in the car’s underbody, which means the interior space and boot volume are not compromised.

Petrol and diesel

Of course, there also a few petrol engines to choose from – three-cylinders offering outputs between 75 and 130 hp and in some cases combinable with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Interestingly, Peugeot still hasn’t written off diesel just yet. The 208 gets access to the 1.5 BlueHDi delivering 100 hp, mated to a manual 6-speed gearbox. The CO2 ratings have not been communicated yet.

Smart, smarter, smartest

Like its bigger brother, the new 208 gets the controversial i-Cockpit – a tiny steering wheel, a fully-digital instrument cluster and a central touch screen combined with physical buttons to command the infotainment, navigation and climate.

As to the ADAS, Peugeot’s latest creation can now be had with adaptive cruise control, active lane keeping assist and a thing called Full Park Assist. The optional TomTom® Traffic connected 3D navigation indicates the traffic conditions and risk zones in real time.
