Are autonomous vehicles safe?

Fatal accidents in self-driving cars can be avoided, despite news of deaths associated with autonomous vehicles (AV) hitting the headlines in 2018.

Fortunately, there are innovators working toward eliminating the possiblity of fatal accidents, one of them being Mobileye, Intel's advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) subsidiary. "Safety is first and foremonst in everything we do, and this includes AV development,"Mobileye Latam Director Ernesto Pesochinsky told Global Fleet in an interview.

In fact, a mathematical model which programs AVs to avoid accidents has been presented to the automotive industry. Known as Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS), it was introduced by Mobileye CEO Ammon Shashua, a computer science professor and computer vision expert.

This is a critical step, according to Pesochinsky. “Besides showing the transparency of a car’s decision-making, it helps society gain more trust in vehicles that keep passengers and road users safe,” the executive said.

Mr. Pesochinsky is also one of the newest members of the Fleet Latam Advisory Board.
