ITS 2019: VW connects with Cities

The International Transport Systems World Congress is one of the leading international conventions on transport technology. The 2019 edition in Singapore hosted 300 exhibitors and organised various sessions and workshops over 5 days. One of them is the Volkswagen Group.

City Partnerships

VW’s objective is to use urban spaces to improve air quality; to this effect, the German carmaker is building partnerships with 12 cities, co-developing a growth market for inner city mobility solutions. At ITS, Volkswagen is showcasing its answers for urban trends and challenges.

The VW Group will be launching some 70 new electric vehicles over the next 10 years, which will include micro-mobility solutions, such as the SEAT’s eXS KickScooter or Volkswagen’s Cityskater and Cargo e-Bike. Similar initiatives are taken in VW’s public transport branche (Scania and MAN). Electric buses (MAN’s New Lion’s City E and Scania’s LF electric bus) will be on market from the end of 2020 onwards.

VW as a Mobility Provider

Akin to other OEMs, VW is profiling itself increasingly as a mobility provider. Examples are Skoda’s CityMove app, active in Prague, that allows consumers to mix various mobility solutions, such as bus, tram, metro, rental bike, taxi and ride-hailing.

The VW strategy regarding mobility is called “Together 2025+” and profiles the group as a solution for sustainable, silent, safe and futureproof individual mobility. Already 12 city partnerships are established to reach these goals; Hanover, Wolfsburg, Prague, Barcelona and Hefei (China) are already part of the VW partnership.
