Saudi women allowed to drive cars in 2018

The Saudi government has approved a law permitting women to get their driver’s licence and drive a car. As from June 2018, it will no longer be illegal for a woman to take the wheel. Today, women who ignore the current driving ban risk being arrested and jailed.

According to the New York times, the change in policy has to do with the fact that Saudi Arabia needs to boost its economy. More people need to contribute to the national treasury by starting to work, including women. To ensure mobility, the government reckons many women will need to use a car.
