Canada announces $300m EV incentive programme

Under the new programme announced by the Canadian federal government, consumers will receive rebates of up to $5,000 (around US$3,800) and $55,000 (around US$ 41,000) for small businesses.

The three-year programme, unveiled by Economic Development minister Navdeep Bains, will go into effect on 1 May but details about how the discount will be reimbursed still need to be specified. These details should be published on the dedicated government website by 30 April.

According to government sources, transportation is the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. One way to reduce the amount of transportation-related GHG emissions is to get more zero-emission vehicles on the road.

In order to achieve that goal the Incentives for the Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Programme, covers battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. A series of conditions apply, include total purchase price, electric range and the number of seats.

Fleets and drivers in Quebec and British Columbia, provinces with their own provincial incentive schemes, will benefit particularly from the new federal programme as they can be stacked on.
